Paris Olympics: Sports Ministry Didn’t Pay Compensation— D’Tigress Coach

Abi Olajuwon, Assistant coach for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, and daughter of Nigerian-American NBA Hall of Fame, Hakeem Olajuwon has publicly condemned Nigerian Ministry of Sports for allegedly not compensating her after the games done by Nigerian team at Paris 2024 Olympics.

Gatekeepers News reports that Abi in a post on Instagram, said neither she nor her fellow assistant coaches have been paid by the ministry.

Abi wrote,” Achieving something at the Olympics that my father did with the USA was a dream come true. Despite the immense effort and dedication of the coaching staff, we are yet to receive the payments due to us. It is disheartening that while players who were paid received less than promised, the assistant coaches have been entirely ignored.”

The disappointed assistant coach also revealed that her attempts to resolve the issue through official channels have been ignored.

She further accused Coach Wakama of removing her from the team’s WhatsApp group after she raised concerns about the outstanding payments.

Abi emphasised a lack of transparency regarding the payment process, noting that she was only removed from the group chat despite several requests for updates for two weeks.

She posted receipts from the group and added, “Asking for updates for over two weeks about payment of Allowances and being Ignored privately and in the group text…. Is the solution to Pay your assistant coaches their “Allowances” for their work???? Nope! Have the Head Coach remove you from the group chat. @fiba#yourcoachoftheyear. “

“I’m ok with speaking up when others are scared too. They said I should receive confirmation of what was allotted for staff l, but I guess they will let me know a different way.”

Recall that D’Tigress defeated Australia 75-62 in their opening match during the 2024 Paris Olympics game, making it Nigeria’s first Olympic basketball victory in two decades.

The team later lost to France, it was however able to secure a place in quarter-finals but lost to USA.
