Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, has urged lawmakers to prioritise the welfare of citizens and work towards achieving peace to resolve the ongoing political crisisway
Gatekeepers News reports that Fubara made this appeal on Thursday while commissioning various projects in the Okrika Local Government Area of the state.
On Wednesday, the governor was denied entry into the Rivers House of Assembly quarters in Port Harcourt, where he intended to present the 2025 budget, due to locked gates.
The assembly quarters serve as the chamber for a faction of the Rivers Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule, which is loyal to Nyesom Wike, the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).
Fubara and Wike have been engaged in a power struggle for control of the state’s political structure, leading to a polarization within the Rivers Assembly.
In December 2024, the governor presented a budget proposal for 2025 amounting to N1.1 trillion to the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led state House of Assembly, which is aligned with him.
Fubara emphasised the necessity of tranquillity for effective leadership and urged discontented politicians to move forward and uphold the supreme court’s resolutions.
“It is important at this stage that we all embrace peace,” Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara’s chief press secretary, quoted him as saying.
“The supreme court has made its judgment, we don’t have any option than to abide by it.
“And, by the special grace of God, we have started the process. We are appealing to other parties, consider the interest of Rivers State, it is important.
“The only thing that we owe this State is peace and development. I am open any day, any time, for total peace in our state, because if I have to govern well, there is a need for peace to prevail.”
