President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s bid to host the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards ceremony.
Gatekeepers News reports that the approval comes as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s presence in African football administration.
The announcement was made during a meeting between Tinubu and Patrice Motsepe at the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said the president also endorsed Nigeria’s proposal to host CAF’s 48th Ordinary General Assembly later in 2026.
The assembly is expected to bring together football administrators and delegates from CAF’s 54 member associations across the continent.
Among those present at the meeting were Ibrahim Gusau, Amaju Pinnick, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Samson Adamu, acting CAF general secretary.
CAF Awards is one of Africa’s biggest football events, recognising outstanding players, coaches, and football stakeholders across the continent.
Nigeria last hosted the ceremony in 2017 when Riyad Mahrez won the men’s award while Asisat Oshoala emerged as the women’s player of the year.
CAF is expected to announce its final decision on the host city for both the awards ceremony and the general assembly in the coming months.
