Lionel Messi has become the subject of an injury concern just weeks before the FIFA World Cup after Inter Miami CF confirmed that the Argentine star is dealing with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Major League Soccer side disclosed the update on Monday following medical examinations carried out after Messi was forced off during Miami’s dramatic 6-4 victory over Philadelphia Union on Sunday.

The 38-year-old forward appeared uncomfortable during the game and was substituted in the 73rd minute after grabbing the back of his left leg. Despite the concern, Messi was seen walking normally as he headed to the dressing room.

In a statement, Inter Miami said: “After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.

“The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”

The club, however, did not provide a specific timeframe for his recovery, leaving uncertainty over his condition ahead of the World Cup, which begins on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Defending champions Argentina national football team will open their campaign five days later against Algeria national football team in Kansas City.

Messi has carefully managed his playing schedule since joining Inter Miami in 2023, with the club frequently resting him during periods of congested fixtures.

Major League Soccer is currently on break due to the World Cup tournament.

Although Messi has not officially confirmed his participation in the competition, he is widely expected to feature for Argentina in what would be a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.

Argentina’s squad for the tournament is expected to be announced next week, while the South American side will travel to the United States for pre-World Cup friendly matches against Honduras national football team on June 6 and Iceland national football team on June 9.
