Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, has expressed profound grief over the death of the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Benin City, His Grace, Most Reverend Augustine Obiora Akubeze, describing his passing as a monumental loss to the Catholic Church, Edo State, Nigeria and the global Christian community.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a condolence statement released by his Chief of Staff Hon Victor Oshioke, Oshiomhole said he received the news of the Archbishop’s death at the age of 69 with “profound shock and heartfelt sadness,” noting that Archbishop Akubeze lived a life that faithfully reflected his episcopal motto, Ut Testimonium Perhibeam Veritati—”That I may bear witness to the Truth.”
The former Edo State governor described the late cleric as a courageous witness to the Gospel, a compassionate shepherd and a humble servant of God whose simplicity, accessibility, gentleness and unwavering commitment to truth and justice earned him the admiration and respect of Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
Oshiomhole recalled that Archbishop Akubeze’s elevation to the Benin Archdiocese in 2011 coincided with his tenure as Governor of Edo State, following his distinguished service as Bishop of Uromi. He noted that although the appointment initially generated resistance, the Archbishop remained steadfast, trusting completely in God’s will and maintaining that a servant of God must faithfully answer wherever the Lord calls.
According to the Senator, the initial opposition eventually gave way to acceptance, admiration and genuine affection as Archbishop Akubeze’s exemplary character, humility and commitment to his pastoral mission united both the clergy and the laity.
Reflecting on their interactions during his years as governor, Oshiomhole said he was always impressed by the Archbishop’s profound intellect, deep spirituality, rich pastoral experience, openness to differing opinions and unwavering confidence in God’s providence.
“His counsel was measured, his convictions were principled, and his life was a testament to selfless service,” the Senator stated.
On behalf of his family and the people of Edo North Senatorial District, Oshiomhole extended his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, the clergy and faithful of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Benin City, and the entire Catholic community.
He prayed that Almighty God would grant the late Archbishop eternal rest and comfort all who mourn him, adding that his enduring legacy of truth, faith, humility and dedicated service would continue to inspire generations to come.
