Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has unveiled a statue in honour of renowned Nigerian author and literary icon, Professor Chinua Achebe, 13 years after his death.
Gatekeepers News reports that the monument was unveiled at the Ugwunwasike Roundabout in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, the hometown of the celebrated novelist.
Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, Soludo described Achebe as one of Africa’s greatest literary figures whose works reshaped global perceptions of the continent and inspired generations of writers. He said the statue was erected to preserve Achebe’s legacy and celebrate his immense contributions to literature, culture and national identity.
The Governor noted that Achebe’s classic novel, Things Fall Apart, remains one of the most influential books ever written by an African author, adding that the literary icon’s life and works continue to project the values, history and resilience of the Igbo people and Nigeria to the world. He urged young people to emulate Achebe’s commitment to excellence, integrity and intellectual achievement.
Achebe, who died in 2013 at the age of 82, is widely regarded as the father of modern African literature. The unveiling formed part of the Anambra State Government’s efforts to honour distinguished sons and daughters of the state whose achievements have earned global recognition.
