The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has been plunged into mourning after a tragic road accident claimed the lives of eight of its students in the early hours of Thursday.
Gatekeepers News reports that the crash, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. opposite Unity Bank along Zaria Road in Jos, involved a trailer and a bus transporting eleven students.
According to Peter Longsan, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau State, seven students were already dead when rescue teams arrived at the scene. An eighth victim later died in hospital, bringing the total fatalities to eight.
The remaining three students—all male, like the deceased—are currently receiving medical treatment.
An eyewitness told Channels Television that the accident was caused by excessive speeding and a wrongful overtaking attempt by the bus driver, which led to a loss of control before the bus rammed into the trailer.
FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Olajide Mogaji, said a thorough investigation had commenced to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash. He also issued a stern warning to motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to avoid risky road behaviour.
“Motorists must avoid night journeys, speeding, dangerous driving, and driving when fatigued or under the influence,” Mogaji said. “The government needs you alive and wants you to live life to the fullest this festive season and beyond.”
He urged the public to report crashes or road emergencies using the FRSC’s toll-free number, 122.
As of the time of filing this report, the University of Jos had not released an official statement on the incident.
