The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq as national electoral commissioner of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), representing North-East geopolitical zone.

Gatekeeepers News reports that the confirmation followed the presentation of a report by the Senate committee on electoral matters during plenary. The committee, chaired by Bako Lalong, informed lawmakers that it had screened the nominee and reviewed her credentials before recommending her for approval.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier forwarded Abubakar-Sadiq’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation in line with constitutional provisions governing appointments to the electoral body.

During the screening process, the committee examined her qualifications and experience, concluding that she possessed the competence and integrity required for the position.

Following the adoption of the committee’s recommendation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio congratulated the new commissioner and expressed confidence that she would contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.

Abubakar-Sadiq, a retired rear admiral, is expected to bring her administrative and leadership experience to the commission as it continues preparations for future elections and reforms aimed at improving transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process
