A Nigerian Army colonel and six soldiers have been killed following a terrorist attack on a military base in Borno State.

Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred in Monguno when insurgents launched a late-night assault on troops stationed at the Charlie 13 military formation.

Sani Uba, spokesperson of the north-east Joint Task Force, said the commanding officer and his team were responding to the attack when they were killed during the operation.

Despite the casualties, troops engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle and eventually repelled the assault, forcing the insurgents to retreat.

Military authorities described the fallen colonel as a courageous leader who moved toward danger to support his men, noting that his actions reflected strong commitment and bravery in combat.

The attack is part of a growing pattern of intensified assaults on military formations in Borno State by groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, who have increasingly targeted bases and attempted to overrun positions in recent months.

The latest incident comes just days after another deadly attack in Benisheikh, also in Borno, where senior military personnel were killed, highlighting ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s north-east.
