A Nigerian sports broadcaster, Temisan Okomi, has died after a brief illness, bringing an end to a long and impactful career in sports journalism.
Gatekeepers News reports that his death was announced on Friday by Classic FM, where he had worked for over a decade.
The station said in a statement, “With the heaviest of hearts, we regret to announce the passing of one of our staff, Temisan Okomi, following a brief illness.”
Until his death, Okomi served as the group head of the sports department at Classic FM, a role that reflected his seniority and influence in the industry. The station described him as a valued team member whose presence and contributions would be deeply missed.
Okomi was widely regarded as a veteran sports journalist with decades of experience. Over the years, he worked with several media organisations, including the now-defunct HiTV, where he contributed during its coverage of European football. He also had stints with Lagos Television and other broadcasting platforms before joining Classic FM in 2014.
Beyond broadcasting, he held an academic background in agronomy, having studied at the University of Uyo before transitioning into journalism.
He is survived by his wife and three children. Colleagues and industry stakeholders have begun mourning his passing, describing it as a significant loss to Nigeria’s sports media landscape.
