Public school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory have commenced an indefinite strike following unresolved demands with the government.
Gatekeepers News reports that a visit to schools across the territory, including LEA Primary School Area 10 Garki and Government Science Technical College Area 3 Garki, revealed empty classrooms and deserted premises, with no students or teachers present.
The strike action stems from a directive issued by the FCT Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, instructing both primary and secondary school teachers to withdraw their services indefinitely from Monday.
In a communiqué jointly signed by the State Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa; State Secretary, Margaret Jethro; and State Publicity Secretary, Ibukun Adekeye, the union said the decision followed an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting.
The meeting reviewed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on March 11, which lapsed on March 29 without any response.
According to the union, the strike became necessary due to the continued silence of authorities on the teachers’ demands, despite worsening economic conditions affecting members.
The NUT noted that the action reflects growing frustration among educators, particularly in the face of rising living costs and what it described as neglect of their welfare in the FCT.
