The Labour Party (LP) has elected former finance minister Nenadi Usman as its substantive national chairperson.
Gatekeepers News reports that Usman emerged at the party’s national convention held on Tuesday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
The convention also produced other members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), including Iheanacho Obioma as national secretary, Nike Oriola as deputy national chairman, Ken Asogwa as national publicity secretary, Oluchi Oparah as national organising secretary, Anslem Eragbe as national financial secretary, and Hilda Dokubo as national women leader.
Speaking after her election, Usman thanked party members and Abia State Governor Alex Otti for the confidence reposed in her, pledging to promote unity, peace and reconciliation within the party ahead of the next general election.
She said her leadership would focus on strengthening the party and fostering internal cohesion.
Usman was appointed chairperson of the party’s national caretaker committee on September 4, 2024.
Her leadership received a boost in January when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially recognised the caretaker committee following a federal high court ruling affirming its legitimacy.
On April 21, the Court of Appeal in Abuja also upheld the lower court ruling and dismissed an appeal by Julius Abure seeking to overturn his removal as the party’s national chairman.
