Tunji Disu, inspector-general of police (IGP), has warned that any officer who violates Force Order 237 governing the use of firearms will face dismissal and prosecution.
Gatekeepers News reports that Disu gave the warning on Thursday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, during the passing-out parade of 1,068 newly trained constables.
He cited a recent incident in Delta state where a police officer killed a restrained suspect, noting that the officer has since been dismissed and will be prosecuted.
Following the ceremony, the IGP also met with officers of the Akwa Ibom police command, where he emphasised discipline and accountability across all ranks.
He urged senior officers to take responsibility for mentoring the newly recruited constables, stressing that their conduct would reflect the standards and integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu said commissioners of police must take full charge of operations within their jurisdictions, adding that they would be held accountable for the actions of officers under their command.
He commended the Akwa Ibom state commissioner of police for what he described as exemplary leadership, noting that the state is the first in the country to issue certificates to newly trained constables.
The IGP also praised the Akwa Ibom state government for its continued support to the police.
The newly passed-out constables received training on the proper handling and use of firearms.
