Peter Obi Picks Kwankwaso As Running Mate For 2027 Presidential Race

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has named former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, confirming weeks of speculation about a possible alliance between the two opposition figures.

Gatekeepers News reports that the announcement signals a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 polls, with Obi and Kwankwaso expected to lead the party’s campaign as it seeks to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to reports, the partnership brings together two influential political blocs with strong support bases across different regions of the country.

The development follows earlier comments by Kwankwaso indicating his willingness to serve as Obi’s running mate if the party decided on a southern presidential candidate. The former Kano governor had argued that Nigeria’s priority should be competent leadership rather than regional considerations.

Political observers have described the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as one of the most significant opposition alliances ahead of the election cycle, with both men expected to combine their political structures and grassroots networks in the build-up to the 2027 contest.
