President Bola Tinubu will deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day celebration.
Gatekeepers News reports that the announcement was made on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) tasked with coordinating the national commemoration.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, inaugurated the committee at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja and described the presidential address as one of the key highlights of the programme approved for the anniversary.
Akume said Democracy Day provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, including the late Moshood Kashimawo (MKO) Abiola, whose election is widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.
According to the SGF, the anniversary also offers the Federal Government a platform to showcase efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
Akume urged members of the committee to commence work immediately, noting that only 10 days remain before the celebration.
He added that this year’s activities would reflect the mood of the nation while demonstrating the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
Other events lined up for the 27th Democracy Day celebration include a world press conference scheduled for June 4.
The programme will also feature special Juma’at prayers on June 5 and an interdenominational church service on June 7.
A Democracy Day public lecture is slated for June 9, while youth- and women-focused programmes will take place on June 10.
In addition to the address to the National Assembly, President Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast on June 12.
The celebrations will conclude with a Democracy Day gala night on the same day.
