United States President Donald Trump has announced that a deal between Washington and Tehran is expected to be signed on Sunday.
Gatekeepers News reports that the president noted it would lead to the immediate reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform on Saturday.
According to Trump, the agreement would ensure that the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes — becomes “open to all” immediately after the deal is signed. He also said Iran would not possess nuclear weapons under the proposed arrangement.
“The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL,” Trump wrote in the post.
The announcement comes after months of negotiations aimed at ending tensions between the US and Iran. Reports indicate that the proposed agreement could extend an existing ceasefire, reopen shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for fresh talks on Iran’s nuclear programme. Mediators from countries including Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey have reportedly been involved in the discussions.
However, Iranian officials have offered a more cautious assessment. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, said earlier that no signing was scheduled for Sunday, although he acknowledged that an agreement could be reached in the coming days.
The Strait of Hormuz has been at the centre of regional tensions in recent months because of its importance to global energy supplies. Any reopening of the waterway is expected to ease concerns in international oil and shipping markets.
Trump also stressed that the United States would not release frozen Iranian assets as part of the agreement, contrasting the proposed deal with the 2015 nuclear agreement reached during former President Barack Obama’s administration.
