President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe as the new chairman of the governing board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Gatekeepers News reports that the appointment was announced on Monday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who said Ogundipe would succeed Professor Olufemi Aina, who stepped down from the position less than a year after his appointment.
According to the presidency, Ogundipe will lead the governing board of the university regulatory body, with responsibilities that include strengthening funding, improving academic stability and enhancing the global competitiveness of Nigerian universities. The appointment is also aimed at advancing quality, access and integrity across the higher education sector.
Onanuga said President Tinubu expects the former vice-chancellor to provide strong leadership and help sustain the credibility of Nigeria’s university system in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Ogundipe served as vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos from 2017 to 2022 and currently serves as pro-chancellor of Redeemer’s University. A professor of botany, he holds a PhD from Obafemi Awolowo University and an MBA from UNILAG.
The 66-year-old academic is also a fellow of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Linnean Society of London and the Royal Society of Biology.
