Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has reacted to the detention of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore at Kuje Correctional Centre, stressing the need to protect democratic rights and uphold the rule of law.
Gatekeepers News reports that Sowore was remanded at the correctional facility by a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi emphasised the importance of maintaining public trust in democratic institutions, warning against any situation that could suggest that government agencies are being used to silence critics or discourage civic participation.
He said democracy flourishes when citizens are free to express their views, hold leaders accountable and engage in peaceful advocacy without fear of intimidation or repression. According to him, constitutional freedoms must remain protected irrespective of political affiliations or differing opinions.
The former Anambra State Governor noted that Nigeria’s security and economic difficulties require constructive engagement and national unity rather than actions capable of deepening divisions among citizens.
Obi also cautioned against treating activists, journalists and government critics as enemies of the state, arguing that such an approach could undermine democratic principles and accountability.
He called on the relevant authorities to respect Sowore’s constitutional rights and ensure that both security and judicial institutions remain impartial in carrying out their responsibilities.
Obi added that efforts to build a better Nigeria must be anchored on strong democratic institutions, the rule of law and respect for fundamental freedoms.
