Troops Arrest Suspected Foreign ISIS Operative

Nigerian troops have arrested a suspected foreign operative linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) during a counter-terrorism operation in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Gatekeepers Newreports that according to security sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the suspect—believed to be an Arab of Moroccan origin—was apprehended after troops repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on the community, forcing the insurgents to abandon equipment and flee.

Following the failed assault, soldiers launched follow-up search and pursuit operations along the terrorists’ escape routes.

During the operation on Monday, troops reportedly recovered several items believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing insurgents, including high-frequency hand-held radios and other communication equipment considered vital to the group’s command-and-control operations.

The recovered materials reportedly provided intelligence that enabled security forces to extend their pursuit into the Lake Chad Islands axis and towards Abadam Local Government Area, where the foreign suspect was eventually arrested.

According to Zagazola Makama, military sources said the suspect had previously come under intelligence scrutiny after a joint forensic analysis conducted with international partners on video footage recovered from a camcorder seized during the Cross Kauwa encounter.

The camcorder was reportedly recovered from a terrorist cameraman who was killed during the failed attack.

The publication noted that extremist groups often deploy media operatives alongside combat units to document attacks for propaganda, recruitment and operational assessments. Investigators reportedly used the recovered footage to identify the suspect.

The suspect has since been airlifted by the Nigerian Air Force to a secure military facility, where he is undergoing interrogation and intelligence analysis.

According to the report, investigators are seeking to determine the suspect’s role within the terrorist network, how he entered Nigeria, his alleged links to ISIS’ transnational operations, and whether he was involved in training, operational planning or media production for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Security sources described the arrest as a significant intelligence breakthrough that could provide valuable information on the structure, financing and international connections of terrorist groups operating across the Lake Chad Basin.

The report also reinforces longstanding assessments by Nigerian security agencies that foreign nationals continue to provide technical support to extremist groups in the region, particularly in areas such as training, communications, media production, explosives handling and strategic coordination.

According to Zagazola Makama, while ISWAP is largely made up of fighters recruited from communities within the Lake Chad Basin, intelligence gathered over the years has indicated the presence of foreign facilitators from countries including Iraq, Somalia and Morocco, who allegedly serve as technical specialists connected to the wider Islamic State network.

Military sources added that the suspect’s interrogation is ongoing and that further details cannot be disclosed for operational security reasons.

They noted that intelligence obtained from the suspect could assist ongoing counter-terrorism operations, help identify additional terrorist cells and expose cross-border routes used by insurgent groups.
