The Delta State Police Command has arrested social media influencer Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over allegations of raping a 20-year-old woman who later died after allegedly ingesting a poisonous substance.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the arrest has sparked widespread public concern and renewed calls for justice for victims of sexual violence.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the Command received a petition alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after the suspect invited her with a promise to train her in content creation through a programme promoted on his social media platforms.

According to the police, the woman was allegedly taken to a hotel shortly after arriving in Asaba, where she was sexually assaulted and physically attacked.

Investigators said the victim later returned home deeply traumatised and recounted the alleged incident to her parents. Before her death, she reportedly recorded a video in which she detailed her alleged ordeal and the emotional distress she experienced following the encounter.

Police said the young woman subsequently consumed a toxic substance in what was believed to be a suicide attempt. She was rushed for medical treatment but later died.

The incident has since triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians demanding a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased.

Following the petition, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command in Effurun to immediately investigate the allegations.

The Command said operatives subsequently arrested Ogbonna, who has since been questioned by investigators.

According to the police, the suspect made statements during preliminary interrogation that are considered relevant to the ongoing investigation, while efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.

Assuring the bereaved family and the public of a diligent investigation, CP Oyeniyi said the Command would ensure that every aspect of the allegations is thoroughly examined.

“The Command remains committed to ensuring justice and appropriate legal action in accordance with the law,” the police commissioner stated.

The police have not announced any formal charges, and investigations into the case are ongoing.
