The Senate has approved a N50 million donation to the families of two teachers and three security personnel who lost their lives during the rescue operation that secured the release of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Gatekeepers News reports that Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the donation during plenary on Wednesday, stating that each of the five bereaved families would receive N10 million as a token of support from the upper legislative chamber.
The donation followed the Senate’s earlier commendation of President Bola Tinubu and security agencies for the successful rescue of the victims after about 56 days in captivity.
The rescue operation claimed the lives of three security operatives—Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa and Police Sergeant Abena John Jerome—while two abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun and John Olaleye, also died during the incident.
Akpabio said the Senate recognised the sacrifices made by the fallen security personnel and teachers, stressing that the donation was a gesture of solidarity with their families. He also urged that the same level of commitment be extended to efforts aimed at rescuing Nigerians held captive in other parts of the country.
The Senate adopted the proposal through a voice vote, after which Akpabio directed Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to present the cheques to the affected families on behalf of the Red Chamber.
