Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has retracted its earlier statement announcing a fire incident at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, clarifying that no fire broke out at the facility.
Gatekeepers News reports that the authority had initially disclosed on Sunday that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) was responding to a fire at the terminal and confirmed that no casualties or fatalities had been recorded. However, in a subsequent update, FAAN said preliminary investigations showed that the incident was not a fire outbreak.
According to the agency, the smoke seen inside parts of the terminal resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system, while the reason for the system’s activation is still under investigation. FAAN added that normal airport operations have resumed, with a detailed probe ongoing to establish the exact cause of the incident.
The clarification came after videos circulated on social media showing passengers gathered outside the terminal as emergency responders attended to the situation, prompting widespread concern.
FAAN thanked passengers, airlines and other airport users for their understanding and cooperation, reiterating its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of airport operations.
The incident occurred months after a separate fire outbreak affected Terminal 1 of the Lagos airport in February 2026.
