Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay team has been stripped of the silver medal it was initially awarded at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Canada successfully appealed its disqualification for an alleged lane infringement.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Nigerian quartet of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 38.12 seconds. They were later elevated to silver after Canada, which finished second in 38.11 seconds, was disqualified for an alleged lane violation. However, Canadian officials lodged an appeal, and after a review of the race footage, the decision was overturned, restoring Canada’s silver medal and moving Nigeria back to bronze.
Australia retained the gold medal after winning the race in 38.07 seconds, while Canada’s reinstatement pushed Ghana off the podium after the West African nation had briefly been promoted to bronze following the initial disqualification.
Despite the relay disappointment, athletics has remained Nigeria’s strongest sport at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The country claimed historic gold medals through Samuel Ogazi in the men’s 400m, Ezekiel Nathaniel in the men’s 400m hurdles, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the men’s shot put, while Goodness Nwanchukwu successfully defended her para discus title. Nigeria also secured several silver and bronze medals across track and field events.
