Patrick Vieira Takes Over As New Senegal Head Coach

Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of Senegal’s men’s national team, marking his first coaching role at international level.

Gatekeepers News reports that Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday after its emergency committee unanimously approved his selection. The former France international succeeds Pape Thiaw, who was dismissed following Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Vieira, 50, was born in Dakar, Senegal, before moving to France at the age of eight. He enjoyed a celebrated playing career, representing clubs including Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City, while winning the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000 with France.

As a coach, Vieira has managed New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa. His appointment therefore gives Senegal a manager with experience in several major European leagues, although this will be his first opportunity to lead a national team.

Vieira’s appointment comes after Senegal’s disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign. The Teranga Lions were eliminated by Belgium in the Round of 32 after surrendering a two-goal lead late in the match. Thiaw was subsequently relieved of his position.

The FSF described the appointment as a strategic decision aimed at building a high-level technical team that aligns with Senegal’s ambitions in future competitions. The federation said discussions over Vieira’s administrative and contractual arrangements were still ongoing as of the announcement.

Vieira’s immediate task will include preparing Senegal for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with qualifiers scheduled to begin in September.
