Arsenal began their English Premier League (EPL) title defence with a comfortable 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.
Gatekeepers News reports that Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were on target as Mikel Arteta’s side dominated the encounter against a Coventry team featuring Nigeria international Frank Onyeka in its starting line-up.
The victory was Arsenal’s eighth consecutive home win over Coventry, who returned to the Premier League after a 25-year absence.
Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute, sweeping Ricardo Calafiori’s low cross into the bottom corner with a first-time finish.
Saka doubled Arsenal’s advantage midway through the first half with a simple tap-in at the far post after Coventry’s goalkeeper parried a deflected cross into his path.
Arsenal went into the interval with a comfortable two-goal lead.
Odegaard completed the scoring four minutes into the second half after receiving Ben White’s cutback before his scuffed effort trickled over the line.
The result extended Arsenal’s record of winning their opening league fixture and marked their fifth consecutive clean sheet.
It was also Arsenal’s fifth successive victory on the opening matchday of an EPL season.
Arsenal will travel to Aston Villa for their second league fixture, while Coventry will host fellow newly promoted side Hull City.
