Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Bissau on Tuesday.
Gatekeepers News reports that Franculino Dju opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute after creating space on the edge of the box before curling the ball into the far corner beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria struggled to create clear chances but came close to equalising before half-time when Alex Iwobi set up Ademola Lookman. However, Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje made a crucial save to preserve the hosts’ lead.
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle introduced Moses Simon and Moses Usor at the start of the second half as Nigeria searched for a way back into the game.
The changes did not produce the desired result as Guinea-Bissau doubled their lead in the 66th minute. Mama Baldé beat Bright Osayi-Samuel before firing a low shot past Nwabali.
Nigeria pushed forward in search of a response but were unable to reduce the deficit. Álvaro Djaló then completed the scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time after moving into the penalty area and slotting the ball into the net.
The defeat leaves Guinea-Bissau top of Group L with six points from two matches, while Nigeria remain on three points after their opening 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar.
The result also marks Guinea-Bissau’s second victory over Nigeria in AFCON qualifying, having previously defeated the Super Eagles 1-0 in Abuja during the 2023 qualifying campaign.
