A grand jury has been formed to hear evidence in the immediate past United States President, Donald Trump criminal probe.
Gatekeepers News reports that district attorney in Manhattan has a convened a grand jury that is expected to decide if former President Donald Trump, other executives at his company or the business should be indicted on criminal charges.
“The panel was convened recently and will sit three days a week for six months,” Washington Post on Tuesday quoted two sources as saying.
“It is likely to hear several matters — not just the Trump case — during the duration of its term, which is longer than a traditional New York state grand-jury assignment,” the people said.
Gatekeepers News reports that Manhattan District Attorney, Cyrus Vance has been investigating Trump’s pre-presidency business dealings for more than two years.
Vance’s office has said in court filings it was investigating “possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct” at the Trump Organization, including tax and insurance fraud and falsification of business records.
The development suggests that Vance’s probe has attained an advanced stage as he insists that he might have “found evidence of a crime – if not by Trump then by someone potentially close to him or by his company.”
A week ago, the New York attorney general’s office said it had initiated a criminal probe into Trump’s company, raising the legal risk for Trump and his family.
Attorney General Letitia James has been investigating whether the Trump Organization falsely reported property values to secure loans and obtain economic and tax benefits.
Trump, who left office in January, has denied any wrongdoing as he described the grand jury seating as “a continuation of the greatest witch hunt in American history,” on Tuesday evening.
“This is purely political, and an affront to the almost 75 million voters who supported me in the presidential election, and it’s being driven by highly partisan Democrat prosecutors,” Trump said.
“Our country is broken, our elections are rigged, corrupt, and stolen, our prosecutors are politicized, and I will just have to keep on fighting like I have been for the last five years.”
