Agnes Tirop: Police Arrest Husband – Ibrahim Rotich

Police have arrested Ibrahim Rotich, husband of Kenyan Agnes Tirop after she was found dead at her home.

Gatekeepers News reports that Kenyan Police on Thursday said they have arrested the husband of distance runner Agnes Tirop – Ibrahim Rotich who was found dead at her home in Iten.

The country’s track federation announced the death of the two-time World Championship bronze medallist on Wednesday. She was 25.

Athletics Kenya in their announcement said the country had “lost a jewel”, while World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said: “Athletics has lost one of its brightest young stars in the most tragic circumstances.”

Gatekeepers News earlier reported that Police said Tirop appeared to have been stabbed in the neck with a knife.

According to Kenyan Police, Rotich was arrested in the coastal city of Mombasa.

Sub County Police Commander for Keiyo North, Tom Makori, told Reuters that “The suspect has been arrested today evening and is in custody at Changamwe police station in Coast Region.

“I can confirm now we have the main suspect in our custody.”

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations added that Rotich was arrested after ramming his car into a lorry while he was trying to flee the country.

Tirop who won bronze medals in the women’s 10,000m at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships and finished fourth in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Olympics, broke the world record in the women-only 10km road race last month.

Tirop came into the limelight when she won the world cross-country title at 19 in 2015, becoming the second-youngest champion ever.
