Senegal have become the first African Nation to qualify for the Round of 16 at the ongoing Qatar 2022 World Cup tournament.
Gatekeepers News reports that Senegal defeated Ecuador 2-1 to Khalifa International Stadium on Tuesday.
The Lions of Terranga rallied to knock out the South Americans with the help of Ismaila Sarr and Kalidou Koulibaly.
Ismaila Sarr put the African nation, ahead from the penalty spot, however, Moises Caicedo equalised in the second half and a draw would have been enough to send South Americans through at Senegal’s expense.
Captain Kalidou Koulibaly of Senegal finally came through after he scored the winning goal to send his country through to the knockout rounds for just the second time in their history.
Senegal will now play the winners of Group B – the group which England currently top – on Sunday night.
Netherlands – Qatar
The 2022 World Cup host, Qatar have been kicked out of the tournament. Qatar had earlier lost chances of a spot at the knockout stage after Senegal defeated them 3 -1 on Friday.
They had earlier lost their opening match to Ecuador on the first day of the campaign.
Qatar were, however, unable to record a single win after Netherlands comfortably defeated them 2-0 win on Tuesday.
Goals from Cody Gakpo and Frenkie de Jong sealed Louis van Gaal’s side’s top spot on the table.
Netherlands will now host the runners-up of Group B, the US at the knockout stage.
Wales – England
England have secured a spot at the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup as the winners of Group B.
The four changes Gareth Southgate made to his team on Tuesday night, Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Kyle Walker, and Phil Foden turned the game around to defeat Wales 3-0.
Iran – USA
USA have sent Iran out of the tournament after defeating them 1-0 on Tuesday.
