All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved the use of a direct primary system for its 2026 presidential primary election, allowing all registered party members to vote across the country’s 8,809 wards.
Gatekeepers News reports that the decision was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by Felix Morka, the party’s national publicity secretary.
According to the party, the guidelines and committees for the exercise were approved by the National Working Committee (NWC) in line with the APC constitution and the Electoral Act. Under the arrangement, results from the 774 local government areas will be collated by designated officers before being forwarded to Abuja for final submission on May 24, 2026.
The APC also named former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, as chairman of the presidential primary election committee. Other members include Ken Nnamani, Victor Ndoma-Egba, Yakubu Dogara, and Idris Wada.
For the appeal committee, the party appointed Aminu Masari as chairman, alongside former House of Representatives speaker Patricia Etteh and Samuel Piwuna.
The APC further unveiled coordinators and collation officers for states and the FCT, including governors and political leaders such as Hope Uzodimma, Babagana Zulum, Siminalayi Fubara, and Dauda Lawal.
The move comes amid ongoing debates within the ruling party over internal democracy and the growing use of consensus arrangements in recent APC primaries.
