Osun State Government has warned residents to brace for possible heavy rainfall, flash floods, windstorms, and other extreme weather conditions during the ongoing rainy season.
Gatekeepers News reports that the warning was issued in a statement released on Monday by Chinwe Obuaku following meteorological forecasts and environmental assessments indicating increased weather-related risks across parts of the state.
According to the government, the predicted intense rainfall could lead to flooding, erosion, destruction of property, and disruptions to transportation and daily activities if urgent preventive measures are not taken.
“Recent meteorological forecasts and environmental observations indicate that Osun State may experience episodes of intense rainfall capable of causing flooding in vulnerable communities,” the statement said.
Residents living in flood-prone communities, riverbank areas, low-lying environments, and locations with poor drainage systems were advised to remain vigilant and take immediate safety precautions.
The government stressed that proactive action by residents would play a major role in reducing the impact of possible disasters.
“Residents living in flood-prone areas, riverbank communities, low-lying environments, and locations with poor drainage systems are particularly advised to exercise maximum caution,” the statement added.
As part of measures to minimise flooding, residents were instructed to clear blocked drainage channels, avoid dumping refuse in waterways, and maintain proper waste disposal practices.
“Desist from dumping refuse in drains, canals, and water passages,” the government warned.
Residents were also advised to avoid unnecessary movement during periods of heavy rainfall.
“Avoid movement during heavy downpours unless absolutely necessary,” the statement noted.
The government disclosed that relevant agencies have been directed to intensify monitoring and emergency response efforts across the state as weather conditions continue to evolve.
It further warned against environmental practices capable of worsening flooding and other hazards.
“The Osun State Government will not tolerate activities that worsen environmental hazards, including indiscriminate waste disposal and blockage of drainage systems,” the statement added.
The government urged residents to comply fully with the advisory, emphasising that collective responsibility is essential to reducing the effects of flooding and wind-related incidents across the state.
