Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) staged a protest on Thursday following the killing of a student during an armed robbery attack in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.

Gatekeepers News reports that the protest erupted after suspected robbers reportedly invaded several houses in the university town in the early hours of Thursday, attacking residents and fatally wounding a student.

Reports indicated that the victim, said to be a 100-level undergraduate preparing for second-semester examinations, was killed during the raid. Witnesses said the attackers struck about six houses in the area, carting away valuables and leaving residents in fear.

The incident sparked outrage among students, who demanded improved security in and around the university community. Some students took to the streets in a peaceful demonstration, expressing frustration over recurring security breaches affecting students living off campus.

In response to the tragedy, the management of OOU declared Thursday a lecture-free day to mourn the deceased student. The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Ayodeji Agboola, through a statement issued by Deputy Registrar Niyi Oduwole, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured students that the institution would work with security agencies to strengthen safety measures.

The latest killing comes amid growing concerns over insecurity around the university. In recent months, students at the OOU Ibogun campus have repeatedly protested armed robbery attacks on hostels, with gunmen reportedly invading student residences, stealing phones, laptops, cash and vehicles, while injuring several occupants. Police had earlier launched investigations into those incidents and promised increased security presence in affected communities.

Student groups and stakeholders have called on the Ogun State Government and security agencies to take urgent action to prevent further attacks and protect students living in university hostels and surrounding communities.
