Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, citing what it described as “unguarded utterances” and actions that could endanger members of the group.
Gatekeepers News reports that the decision was disclosed in a statement issued by Chikadibia Edoziem, head of IPOB’s Directorate of State (DOS), the organisation’s highest decision-making body.
According to the statement, the suspension was approved during a DOS meeting held on June 17 after reviewing an intelligence report concerning Kanu’s alleged interactions with officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) while in custody.
IPOB said the move was aimed at protecting the organisation and preventing actions that could lead to arrests, torture, or the deaths of its members.
The group also announced that Kanu has been removed as Director of Radio Biafra. IPOB maintained that it is a self-determination movement established by Biafrans in the diaspora and that no individual has the authority to dissolve or override its central leadership structure.
Edoziem said the suspension would help stop individuals or groups from carrying out activities in IPOB’s name without authorisation. He added that any future actions taken under the authority of the now-suspended office of the leader would not be attributed to the organisation.
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted on terrorism-related charges by a Federal High Court in Abuja in 2025. He has appealed the conviction.
