Rotimi Amaechi, vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has said he will resign if Nigeria does not begin to change within one year of an ADC administration.
Gatekeepers News reports that Amaechi made the statement during an interview on AIT on Wednesday, while discussing what an ADC government would prioritise if elected in 2027.
“If Nigeria does not begin to change, one year after we have come to office, come to me, I will resign,” Amaechi said.
Asked whether he meant Nigeria must completely change within one year, he said: “One year after? Yes, if Nigeria does not begin to change. I didn’t say Nigeria must change or that everything must change. But even if you feel the change, you have a breath of fresh air.”
The former Rivers State governor said an ADC administration would focus on security, education and the economy.
“You must deal with three things. You must deal with security, you must deal with education, you must deal with the economy before this country can progress,” he said.
Amaechi also said addressing corruption would be necessary to fund development.
“And to do all that, corruption will have to come down because there is no money for anybody to steal,” he said.
“The reason why these things are not being done is that the money that will be used to fund these things are in private pockets.”
On the economy, Amaechi criticised Nigeria’s dependence on imported finished goods.
“Going by how high poverty is in Nigeria, now we import over 46 percent of finished goods. Who are those importing it? Nigeria is in trouble,” he said.
He also spoke about Nigerians who reportedly hooted at President Bola Tinubu during his recent movement from the Lagos International Airport to his residence.
“I watched people hoot at Tinubu from the Lagos International Airport to his house. If we become president, nobody will do that. They will be clapping for us because we will change Nigeria,” Amaechi said.
Amaechi’s comments come ahead of the 2027 presidential election, in which he is expected to contest as running mate to ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.
