Reno Omokri has said Mexico has formally accepted his appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador, following months of waiting for diplomatic clearance.
Gatekeepers News reports that Omokri announced the development on X on Tuesday, October 20. He said Mexico’s chargé d’affaires in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, handed the approval to Babagana Wakil, director of protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Omokri said the document conveyed Mexico’s decision “accepting me” as Nigeria’s envoy. His posting also includes concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
The diplomatic consent, called agrément, is the receiving country’s acceptance of a proposed ambassador.
President Bola Tinubu assigned Omokri to Mexico in March when he approved postings for 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners. However, the posting awaited the host government’s consent.
In August, the foreign affairs ministry identified Mexico and Japan as countries whose acceptance of two appointments remained outstanding. It said diplomatic engagements were continuing to secure the approvals.
