Obi Meets Jonathan In Abuja

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), on Monday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja as part of ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general election.

Gatekeepers Newreports that Obi, now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), visited Jonathan alongside south-east leaders at the former president’s residence in the nation’s capital.

In a post on X, Obi said the meeting formed part of his “extensive consultations” with Nigerian leaders on the country’s future and the 2027 elections.

“Our discussions were frank, thoughtful, and anchored on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria on the path of unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance,” Obi wrote.

He said the meeting came at a critical time when the country is facing economic hardship, rising insecurity and deepening social divisions.

“At a time when our nation continues to grapple with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and deepening social divisions, it has become imperative that leaders across regions come together to reflect, consult, and act in the overall interest of the Nigerian people,” he said.

Obi stressed that Nigeria needs leadership defined by “competence, character, capacity, and compassion,” rather than personal ambition.

“The kind of leadership that understands that governance is not about sharing what is left, but about creating what is needed. We must move from a consumption-driven nation to a production-driven one, where our vast human and natural resources are effectively harnessed for the common good,” he added.

According to Obi, the 2027 election presents an opportunity to “reset the trajectory of the country.”
