Nigeria Sets New African Relay Record – Secures World Championship Qualification

Nigeria has broken the African record in the mixed 4×100 metres relay after an impressive performance at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Nigerian team clocked a record time of 40.24 seconds during the heats of the competition.  Although Nigeria finished fourth in the race, the team secured one of the fastest non-automatic qualification spots to reach the final of the event.

The performance also earned Nigeria qualification for the mixed 4x100m relay event at the 2027 World Athletics Championships scheduled to take place in Beijing, China.  

According to , the relay final is expected to hold on Sunday, with Nigeria hoping to build on its historic outing. The achievement further strengthens Nigeria’s growing reputation in relay events on the global athletics stage.  

However, it was a mixed outing for Team Nigeria in other relay events at the competition. The men’s 4x100m team finished fifth in their heat, while the women’s team failed to complete their race following a baton exchange error.

Nigeria’s men’s, women’s and mixed 4x400m relay teams also missed automatic qualification spots but will have another opportunity through the repechage rounds.
