The United Kingdom’s Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Sir Charlie Collins, has arrived in Maiduguri, Borno State, as part of efforts to strengthen defence cooperation between the UK and Nigeria in the fight against terrorism and regional insecurity.

Gatekeepers News reports that the visit was announced on Tuesday by the British Defence Staff West Africa, which said Collins is in Maiduguri to observe UK-Nigeria defence collaboration firsthand and support Nigeria-led efforts aimed at improving security and stability in the region.

According to the statement, the British military chief is engaging with officers of the Nigerian Army and assessing ongoing areas of cooperation between both countries, including security support, military training and operational collaboration.

Photographs released from the visit showed Collins receiving a guard of honour and participating in ceremonial exchanges with senior Nigerian military officers.

The visit comes as Nigeria continues to deepen international partnerships to combat terrorism, insurgency and other security threats, particularly in the North-East.

It also follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent remarks that cooperation with the UK remains important in addressing terrorism challenges affecting Nigeria and the wider Sahel region.
