Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has rescued 15 minors allegedly trafficked by a suspected fake non-governmental organisation (NGO) official who promised them free education.
Gatekeepers News reports that NSCDC spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday.
According to the corps, the suspect allegedly posed as an official of the National Council of Child Rights Advocates and operated under the guise of an NGO and orphanage programme known as the “Back to School Project.”
The suspect reportedly convinced parents in Kama Madaki and Gudindi Mada communities in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State to release their children, promising them access to free education.
The NSCDC said 16 children were initially trafficked, with 15 later rescued from suspected buyers who allegedly paid about N2 million for each child.
Three children were rescued in Anambra, Imo and Enugu states, while the remaining 12 were recovered during coordinated operations along eastern transit routes.
Three suspected buyers, comprising one man and two women, were also arrested in connection with the case.
The corps said investigations are ongoing and that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted.
