A 20-year-old student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), identified as Audi Emmanuel, has been found dead in his apartment in Owo, Ondo State, in what authorities suspect to be a case of suicide.
Gatekeepers News reports that Emmanuel, a Computer Engineering student, was discovered lifeless in his rented apartment along Awolowo Road in Emure-Ile, within Owo Local Government Area. His body was reportedly found hanging from a rope and had begun to emit a foul odour at the time of discovery.
According to residents, neighbours were alerted after noticing a strong smell coming from the room. Their attempts to reach him proved unsuccessful, prompting them to force the door open.
“Emmanuel’s body was found hanging in his rented apartment. The odour from his room was so heavy. We tried to reach him, but we couldn’t. So we decided to force the door open,” one neighbour said.
“We didn’t know what could have happened for such action. But we immediately contacted the police, who came to evacuate the corpse. We have not seen any form of suicide note.”
The incident has left the surrounding community in shock.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Abayomi Jimoh, said officers were promptly deployed to the scene.
“The Ondo State Police Command confirms the report of a suspected suicide incident at Emure-Ile involving a 20-year-old student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, who was found dead in his residence,” he said.
“Police operatives promptly visited the scene, where the body was recovered and deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Preliminary observations suggest a case of suicide; however, a thorough investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Jimoh added that an autopsy would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. He also conveyed the command’s condolences to the family of the deceased.
“The Command commiserates with the family of the deceased and urges members of the public to seek support and speak up during moments of emotional distress, as help is always available.”
