Abubakar Malami, former attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, has emerged as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Kebbi State.

Gatekeepers News reports that the development was announced on Sunday by Mohammed Doka, Malami’s special assistant on media, in a statement shared on the former minister’s X page.

According to the statement, party leaders and stakeholders adopted Malami as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the governorship election.

The ADC also confirmed other candidates for the 2027 elections in the state. Retired military officer Aminu Bande emerged as the party’s senatorial candidate for Kebbi Central, while Ibrahim Mera, a retired deputy comptroller-general, secured the ticket for Kebbi North. Garba Danjuma was picked for Kebbi South senatorial district.

Reacting to his emergence, Malami thanked party members and supporters for their confidence in him, pledging commitment to good governance, security and development in Kebbi State. He said the party would work towards building a more prosperous future for residents of the state.

Malami had earlier declared his intention to contest the governorship election, citing worsening insecurity, poverty, poor healthcare and economic hardship in Kebbi as reasons for joining the race.

The former minister is, however, facing separate criminal charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

In January, a federal high court in Abuja also ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties allegedly linked to him and two of his sons.
