Abba Kabir Yusuf has nominated Murtala Sule Garo, son-in-law of Atiku Abubakar, as the new deputy governor of Kano State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Governor has already forwarded Garo’s name to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, following due process.
The nomination comes after the resignation of former deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, who stepped down amid a political rift with Yusuf and subsequent moves by the state assembly to impeach him over alleged misconduct and abuse of office.
In a statement issued by the governor’s chief press secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the decision was said to be in line with constitutional provisions that empower a governor to appoint a replacement when a vacancy arises.
Garo, 48, is described as an experienced political administrator with over two decades in public service. He has held several positions, including local government chairman, commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, and chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano.
He was also the deputy governorship candidate of the APC in the 2023 general election and is married to one of Atiku Abubakar’s daughters.
The state government said his nomination is part of efforts to strengthen governance and ensure continuity in service delivery across Kano State.
