Tobi Amusan has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, after emerging victorious in the women’s 100m hurdles final.

Gatekeepers News reports that the world record holder finished the race in 12.83 seconds on Wednesday to secure another continental title ahead of her competitors. Liberia’s Ebony Morrison claimed silver, while Nigeria’s Adaobi Tabugbo settled for bronze in the event.

The triumph marks Amusan’s third African Championships title in the women’s 100m hurdles, having previously won gold in Asaba in 2018 and successfully defended the title in Mauritius in 2022.

Nigeria also recorded more podium finishes at the championships. Rosemary Chukwuma secured silver in the women’s 100m sprint after narrowly losing the top spot to Cameroon’s Herverge Etame in a photo-finish race.

In the men’s 100m final, Chidera Ezeakor earned bronze with a time of 10.31 seconds behind Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana.

Before Amusan’s victory, Team Nigeria had already opened its medal account through Divine Oladipo and Obiageri Amaechi, who won silver and bronze respectively in the women’s discus throw event.
